River Monsters Sign the Franchises First Player

The Seguin River Monsters, a brand new addition to the Texas Collegiate League for the 2022 season, have made a splash with the team's first player signing, locking in power hitting first baseman and DH Jose Gutierrez from Clarendon College. Before signing with Seguin Friday evening, Gutierrez went deep twice for Clarendon as they split an afternoon double dip with Western Texas College.

Jose was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 2018 MLB draft, but made the decision to attend college and play for Dallas Baptist University. Gutierrez was born in Piedras Negras, Mexico and his family moved to Arlington, TX when he was young. Family and faith also played into Jose’s decision to attend DBU.

Gutierrez is off to a strong start this year with the Clarendon Bulldogs batting .370 and slugging .793 while drawing 20 walks. “We are really excited to make Jose our team's first signing. Coach Reyes was very high on him and we quickly saw what a commanding presence he has at the plate,” said GM Scott Barry.

Look for Seguin to continue to announce more players over the next few weeks as they build their inaugural roster in anticipation for the team's opening game on May 31st vs. the Victoria Generals.
