Baton Rouge, LA- Preston Freeman's 5th inning GRAND SLAM fueled the River Monsters offense and a dominant start from Thomas Kuykendall kept the Rougarou bats at bay as Seguin secured a 10-5 victory to begin their important 3 game road trip in Louisiana.
Freeman, a freshman infielder from UTSA, launched his first bomb of the season with bases loaded during the River Monsters 7-run fifth inning. He finished the game with 2 hits and 5 RBI's.
Kuykendall, a junior heading to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, went 7 strong for Seguin striking out 8 Baton Rouge hitters while giving up just 3 runs on 6 hits.
Seguin took the lead in the top of the second on Freeman's first hit of the game and first of his 5 RBIs as he drove in Adrian Torres, a junior OF from UTRGV, after Torres doubled. Freeman would come around to score on an Xavier Arias single. Arias, a sophomore from Harding University, had 2 hits, a run scored and an RBI in the game. Torres would finish 2-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
River Monster first baseman Connor Kaiser, a junior from Lamar University, started off the fifth inning that busted the game open for the River Monsters. Kaiser finished 2-4 with 2Rs, an RBI and walked once. Garrett Felix, a junior OF from Nicholls State and Alex Gonzalez, a junior INF from Texas State made it three singles in row to start the inning, with Kaiser scoring on the Gonzalez hit. Adrian Torres would walk and all three runners would score on the Freeman tater.
Damien Rodriguez, a utility player from UTRGV, would go 2-4 with an RBI for Seguin, making it six River Monsters with multiple hits on the night. Six ‘Sters would also produce an RBI and 7 would cross the plate.
Logan Stockton, a senior from Shorter University, who usually is behind the plate for the River Monsters, made his season debut on the mound, pitching the final two innings for Seguin.
The win keeps the River Monsters in second place in the Texas Collegiate League in the month of July. If Seguin holds that 2nd place spot, they would clinch their first playoff birth as a franchise since joining the league last summer.
The River Monsters remain in Louisiana as they head to Lafayette to take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters in a crucial match up between two teams fighting for the playoffs. First pitch at Fabacher Field is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
